Honor Guard

What is the CAP Honor Guard?

The CAP Honor Guard is a ceremonial program comprised of Honor Guard Units (HGUs).

  • HGUs are comprised of Honor Guardsmen trained in Honor Guard philosophy, ceremony, uniform wear, and manuals.

Honor Guard Units provide a service to the wing and community, and a service opportunity to Honor Guardsmen.

  • Honor Guardsmen and the Honor Guards they serve on are ambassadors for CAP, charged with rendering honor to the Colors and to the service of others.

What is the Bessemer Composite Squadron Honor Guard Unit?

This is a new squadron Honor Guard Unit (aka the BCS-HGU).

  • Approved for operation by Col. Williams, Alabama Wing Commander.

  • Headed by Bessemer Composite Squadron cadets and Senior Member graduates of the MAR Honor Guard Academy.

The BCS-HGU’s goal is to develop an honor guard team that exemplifies Civil Air Patrol’s core values while executing the highest levels of self-discipline, servant leadership, volunteer service, and engaging in community outreach through ceremonies such as colors presentations, funeral honors, and wreath laying.

This Unit will be operated directly from our squadron building.

This is a GREAT opportunity to enhance your cadet’s/your personal leadership skills, self-discipline, character, and drill knowledge! Additionally, this is an AMAZING way to get more involved in the squadron and the community!

What are the financial commitments?

Required purchases before end of training:

Class A Overcoat ≈$40
Wheel Cap ≈$95
Wheel Cap Device (male) ≈$11
Extra pair of blues dress shoes ≈$56
Estimated total cost  $202

The Bessemer Composite Squadron will try to assist with purchases of the above uniform items. Be aware that at least some of the items above will need to be purchased by the cadet/guardian.

What are the time commitments?

  • Weekly practices - 1 hour before each Monday meeting

  • Monthly weekend practices - 1 Saturday per month

  • At-home practice

  • Ceremonies/Presentation of colors at events

It is imperative to attend as many meetings as possible in order to succeed in the program. However, it is acceptable to miss a few practices periodically as long as you/your cadet recognizes that whatever skills were taught during those meetings will need to be made up.

The BCS-HGU is an exciting opportunity for your cadet/you to enhance their/your cadet career through extensive drill and ceremonies training, a disciplined and professional learning environment, constant applications of the Core Values, and plenty of opportunities to perform for the squadron and community.

We at the BCS-HGU would be thrilled to see your cadet/you as a part of this exciting program.
